Asst.Prof.Dr. Onur Okan Demirci said, “It may occur in the form of difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, waking up early in the morning and not having a restful sleep. It can negatively affect a person's life by disrupting their professional and social functions, and when this condition lasts for at least 1 month, insomnia is diagnosed. "Although the amount of sleep sufficient for rest varies from person to person, less than 6 hours of sleep and at least 3 times a week are considered criteria for diagnosis," he said. stated Dr. Demirci listed the causes of insomnia as follows:
“Many factors may be the cause of insomnia: Perfectionist personality traits, High anxiety level, Sleep apnea syndrome, Restless legs syndrome, Stimulant drugs, narcotic substances, Irregular working hours, Biological and Genetic factors are the most common causes. Factors such as coffee, tea, chocolate, nicotine, ambient temperature, noise and bright light can also disrupt sleep, depending on the person's biological predisposition. Anxious thoughts such as "I need to sleep well, what if I can't sleep again" are one of the most important factors that make it difficult to fall asleep. In addition, insomnia may be observed as a symptom of depression, in which case other symptoms of depression should be carefully examined.”
Noting that people with insomnia problems often experience problems such as fatigue and lack of attention, Dr. Demirci said, “Other problems are: Poor performance at work or school, Daytime sleepiness, Loss of motivation, Tendency to make mistakes while driving or working (twice the risk of traffic accidents), Tension, irritability, Additionally; Diseases such as heart attack, heart failure, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, stroke, and chronic lung disease also occur frequently in insomnia. Despite all these negative consequences, only 5 percent of those with chronic insomnia seek health care. "Nearly half of these people try to cope with the problem with inappropriate drug use or alcohol," he said. Explaining that the problem of insomnia can be dealt with by first trying to ensure sleep hygiene, Dr. Demirci said, “Some of the suggestions that can be made in this direction are as follows: After: Only go to bed when you feel sleepy. Do not wait more than 15 minutes on average to fall asleep. If you cannot sleep during this time, go to another room and do something else. Wake up at the same time every day, set an alarm if necessary. Do not nap during the day. Do not check the clock throughout the night, as this will increase your anxiety about not being able to sleep. "Do not consume coffee, tea, chocolate or cola after 17:00," he said.
