Diagnosis
The most common cause of painful swelling and masses frequently seen around the wrist is ganglion cysts arising from the joint fluid between the wrist bones
These cysts are subject to strain. Depending on the condition
they may appear and grow gradually.
Treatment
The first precaution to be taken is to restrict wrist movements and rest the wrist. wrist
splints can be used.
Various sources state that the fluid in this cyst can be removed with a syringe. However, since this cyst does not eliminate its
membrane, it can often re-occur.
Surgical removal of the cyst would be the most appropriate treatment. Surgical treatment should be performed under appropriate conditions, under anesthesia and
tourniquet, and the cyst should be removed as a whole. The defect in the joint capsule should be repaired and
recurrence should be prevented.
