Psychology of Expectation

We can evaluate the concept of expectation as an individual's attitude and expectation about what kind of formations the concepts he perceives in the environment he is involved in may lead to. Expectations are one of the inevitable and essential elements of daily life.

People form stereotypes and then have various expectations about the people or groups that are the target of these stereotypes. Stereotypes are an important source of expectations regarding the qualities that a group and its members are likely to have

Expectation Effect

As a result of some unconscious judgments that individuals carry, the effects of these expectations It is possible to see. These effects have been observed in various fields. This concept, also called the self-fulfilling prophecy or the "pygmalion effect", can be explained as a person exhibiting behavior that coincides with the expectations of other individuals (especially people he sees as superior to himself in any aspect) after a while. As an example of these effects, in mythology, Oedipus' greatest fear is that he will kill his father and marry his mother, according to the prophecy, and this prophecy will eventually come true.

In social psychology, the expected behavior is exhibited through the process of causing expectations about a situation that does not initially have reality, to come true. It is defined as the theory of "self-fulfilling prophecy" in which this non-existent state turns into reality. In other words, a person fulfills his own prophecy. Negative emotions are pregnant with negative consequences. As another mythological example, Pygmalion, who gave his name to this concept, builds a statue representing the ideal woman in his dreams. Faced with the beauty of the statue, Pygmalion falls in love with it and begs the Greek goddess Venus to bring life to the statue she built. Venus accepts this request and brings the statue to life. Pygmalion and the human statue experience a happy love affair.

Interaction with the Psychology of Individuals

Each individual differs from each other. These differences also mean that they differ in their thoughts, wishes, ideals and dreams, and it is natural that expectations are formed due to these. Unless these expectations exist, life becomes less important. It is a denial. The formation of these expectations is shaped by the influence of age, mentality, educational status, economic conditions and many environmental factors that I cannot list. For example, while studying at university, the motivation to step into the best profession and start earning money as soon as possible is dominant, while in professional life, the expectation of a nice home and the welfare of the children tends to arise. Our expectations change over time and a different expectation is acquired. We can consider these as motivations that shape and direct our lives. Based on the fact that the actions taken in human life are aimed at realizing our dreams and expectations, we can conclude that the common effort of all humanity is in this direction. It should not be ignored that human beings are insatiable creatures and it is natural to see new expectations beyond the ones met. In cases where newly formed expectations are not met, the importance of previously met expectations is ignored. When their expectations from the people around them are not met, a request is made directly or indirectly from the other party to meet these expectations. When these demands are not met, anger may arise and it may become difficult to cope with this anger. The person who is expecting may experience behaviors such as withdrawal and resentment. Sometimes it may not be a problem if the expectations are not met, but the disappointments experienced allow us to understand the limits of the other party.

Effect on Human Life

Conclusion Individuals tend to act according to their own expectations or the expectations of other individuals on them, but without expectations, the elements of imagination will become unusable, and without these expectations, it will be difficult for us to determine our future and our goals. Having realistic expectations and working hard for them, rather than fanciful attitudes, can have the effect of mitigating the destructive effects of these expectations on people.
