Pediatric Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Feryal Gün Soysal told you what you need to know about digestive system bleeding in children.
The problem of bleeding from the mouth or anus, which we refer to as digestive system bleeding in children, occurs as a result of a problem in the digestive system. Blood is often seen in the stool or vomit; the degree of bleeding may be small or severe. When these bleedings, which can cause serious health problems, are noticed, a doctor should be consulted immediately and the disease causing the bleeding should be investigated.
Bleeding symptoms may not be obvious
Digestive system bleeding may not be noticed because it may be visible in the stool or vomit or may occur secretly. Attention should be paid to signs of occult bleeding, and the symptoms observed in the child should be fully reported to the doctor. Symptoms of occult bleeding may include difficulty breathing, chest pain, dizziness, fainting, and abdominal pain.
Digestive system bleeding causes
Generally according to age groups. Upper and lower gastrointestinal tract bleeding varies. While bloody vomiting and dark-coloured almost black bleeding are frequently observed in upper system bleeding, fresh blood may come from the anus in lower system bleeding. Many reasons such as swallowing maternal blood, stomach ulcers, inflammation in the esophagus, dilated blood vessels, anal fissure, intestinal obstruction, inflammation in the colon and rectum can lead to gastrointestinal bleeding.
Painless imaging is now possible with medical advances. In the treatment of oral and anal bleeding in children, the patient's history is first evaluated and a physical examination is performed. If the problem is caused by medication use, different medication treatment is planned. When necessary, the stomach and intestines are evaluated with endoscopy methods and bleeding status is examined. Your child will not feel pain or suffering as a sedative injection is administered during the procedure. Drug therapy, fluid treatments and serum treatments are also important treatment plans in this process.
