Pregnancy and Antibiotic Use

Antibiotic use during pregnancy is a frequently asked question and one that pregnant women are most hesitant about. The antibiotics we use during pregnancy are in group B, and research conducted with this group of antibiotics has not clearly found any side effects on the baby.

If possible, care should be taken not to use unnecessary medication during pregnancy, but antibiotics should be used when necessary and the infection should be treated, otherwise it should be treated early. We may encounter life-threatening negative situations such as birth, endometritis, amnionitis, premature rupture of membranes.

When using antibiotics during pregnancy, the antibiotic you use should not harm the baby.

FDA (Food and Drug administration) Antibiotic use during pregnancy is classified as follows:

Class A: It is the group in which there is no risk to the baby in controlled human studies. However, there is no drug in this group because no studies have been conducted on it.

Class B: It has not been shown to carry a significant risk in human and animal studies, it has not been proven to pose a risk to the fetus (baby) in animal studies, but human experiments have not been conducted and animal studies have shown no side effects to the baby. Although they have side effects, these side effects have not been observed in controlled human studies.

Class C: Drugs that do not have human studies, but have shown fetal side effects in animal studies.

Class D: Drugs that are harmful to the human fetus, but only to the mother. These are drugs in which these effects can be ignored in some life-threatening situations.
