Hair Loss in Women

Hair loss is an important problem in both men and women. It is natural to lose a certain amount of hair every day. These are hairs that have completed their natural lifespan and need to be shed. New ones appear in their place. Although it varies according to various sources, losing up to 100 hairs per day is considered normal.

Hair loss in women can occur for many different reasons.

Genetic factors: Although genetic factors play a role in hair loss in women as in men, the loss is not severe enough to cause baldness as in men. In this form, called “Female pattern hair loss”, adnrogen hormone levels are normal and it begins at an older age than in men. In women, there is usually diffuse hair loss (covering the entire scalp). Hair becomes thinner or sparser throughout the scalp. Miniaturization of terminal hairs occurs to a lesser extent than in men. Therefore, complete hair loss is rare. However, after menopause or in cases where androgens increase significantly in the blood, the forehead and crown may become more pronounced, as in men. In women, the frontal hairline is usually preserved. While men see male pattern hair loss as acceptable, it is more difficult for women to accept this situation.

Factors that cause hair loss in women other than genetic reasons are as follows:

Hormone imbalances: An important reason for hair loss and hair loss in women is hormone imbalances and hormone treatments. Using or discontinuing hormonal treatments such as birth control pills may lead to hair loss.

Postnatal period. In pregnant women, most of the hair stops shedding due to the effect of hormones and waits in the growing phase. With the withdrawal of hormones after birth, the hair goes into a resting phase and begins to shed excessively within 2-3 months. This process may take up to 6 months – 1 year.

High fever and severe infections: Extensive hair loss may develop 4 weeks to 3 months after a high fever and a severe illness.

Thyroid disease: Medically referred to as hyper and hypothyroidism Hormone disorder caused by the thyroid gland working too much or too little can also cause hair loss.
Iron Deficiency: Iron deficiency anemia, or depletion of iron stores, can lead to hair loss.
Unbalanced diet and stress. Nutrition is very important for our hair. With unconscious diets and one-sided nutrition, the hair cannot receive enough vitamins, minerals and proteins required in its life cycle. As a result, hair loss and hair loss problems occur.
