The Story of a Premature Baby

As it is known, pregnancy is a 9-month process and birth occurs as a result of this process, but sometimes birth occurs spontaneously before this expected period is completed and doctors decide to give birth early due to some health problems of either the mother or the baby. As a result, before 37 weeks. Births that occur before are called premature birth. As this 37-week period decreases to earlier periods such as 35, 32, 28 weeks, the problems that may be experienced after birth increase at the same rate.

If we summarize the basic problems that await premature babies after birth, :

1) Respiratory distress: The baby needs oxygen or respirators after birth because the lungs have not developed enough to breathe on his own in the external environment

2) Hypothermia: Hypothermia, which is a low body temperature, is normally The baby, whose subcutaneous fat tissue has increased in recent months, cannot maintain his/her temperature due to his low weight due to premature birth, is prone to hypothermia and therefore needs the temperature inside the incubator for a long time

3) Feeding Problem: The sucking reflex is not developed enough or Difficulty in feeding because the breastfeeding power is weak and the problem of insufficient digestion of the sucked milk and therefore the tendency for blood sugar to decrease

4) Tendency to infection due to inadequate development of the immune system

5) Early onset of neonatal jaundice begins and rises to dangerous levels in a short time

Due to the problems summarized above, premature babies stay in incubators and intensive care units for days to get oxygen and maintain their temperature, and for jaundice treatment, and they need to be treated with serum and nasal catheter because their nutrition is not sufficient. They need nutrition. Families who encounter these situations have doubts about the adequacy of the hospital where they were born and the staff working there, and when their stay is prolonged, they are referred to intensive care units outside Bodrum. However, careful monitoring of pregnant women and the newborn baby before and after birth, It minimizes the risks that may occur after birth and premature births are no longer a nightmare.

1) The obstetrician and the pediatrician must be in communication and give advice to the mother before birth. Medicines that support lung maturation should be administered.

2) After birth, both the pediatrician and the nurses will not give the baby too invasive interventions, such as taking blood, cleaning the mouth and nose with a tube for a long time, washing the body after birth, which will put the baby under stress after birth. interventions should be avoided, the temperature should be provided immediately, minimal handling should be done and sterile work should be done, feeding should be started in a short time, oxygen therapy should be given only as needed and kept in the incubator and hospital as long as necessary, the mother should be breastfed and discharged as soon as possible.

3 )The home environment should be sterilized, the number of visitors should be controlled, adequate temperature preservation should be provided in the baby's room, breast milk should be indispensable, vaccinations and monthly check-ups should be done regularly.

I wish everyone happy, healthy, successful children and generations.
