The lymphatic system is one of the systems that keeps the body healthy.Lymphatic vessels carry a transparent fluid that is rich in protein and this fluid is called lymph fluid.
This fluid tries to cleanse our body by carrying substances that may be harmful to our body, such as bacteria, viruses and waste materials. If the system cannot function for any reason, this fluid begins to come out into the tissue spaces in that area and a situation called lymphedema occurs. Lymphedema is divided into primary (congenital) and secondary (later). We see it most frequently in the arms, legs, trunk, face or neck during and after cancer treatment approaches.
Especially after the removal of lymph nodes in the armpit after breast cancer, lymphedema may develop in the breast and arm. Surgically removed lymph nodes disrupt the lymphatic flow in that area.
But it is considered a chronic and progressive disease. Early diagnosis and The disease can be controlled and its progression can be prevented with physiotherapy.
