Coronavirus and Our Mental Health

The corona (corvid-19) threat, which affects all of Turkey and spreads day by day; While it has forced people to stay in their homes, it has increased people's anxiety level and pushed them to create their own shield against the outside world. Although our people are not used to isolating themselves socially, they have had to face this situation to protect their own health. Meeting this situation with a sense of awareness within the family will reduce negative feelings such as anxiety, anxiety and stress. We must accept that this process is temporary and we must protect our psychology by believing this. Of course, this process will create trauma for many people, and these traumas will also have negative consequences.
However, in order to minimize such thoughts, we should not neglect to respect the space of other household members while protecting our own psychological space during our stay at home. Individuals minimizing interference in each other's space can be considered directly proportional to spending time individually. For this reason, we can create quality time periods for ourselves by devoting time to our hobbies.
We can actually see these days, which we can describe as a period of introspection and bonding, as an advantage for the times we can spend with our family
. Directing our focus to the issues we ignore and dealing with the issues we leave uninterested due to busyness will help us move away from the questions that occupy our minds and not be overwhelmed by our situation. While doing this, we should not stop ourselves from socializing or cut off our communication with our environment. We may feel lonely because the most tiring part of this process is being separated from our loved ones, our circle of friends, school or work environment. In order to compensate for this, communicating with our environment, even using online platforms, will confirm our stay at home. Considering this as a process of psychological purification; It will enable us to reach the right answers with the right questions. Young people who suffer from staying at home will especially be exposed to the annoying and depressing phases of this process. However, one should be aware that maintaining social isolation actually means protecting the health of the whole surrounding population, especially their own families, and as much as possible, one person from each family should be kept in mind. should go out when necessary. By changing this person every 15 days, the 14-day rule is adhered to and the family members are isolated from the situation to some extent.
In this process where we are all worried; Obtaining enough information will enable us to keep our anxiety level to a minimum. We should only take broadcasts that are informative, precautionary or converted into an action plan, not every discourse spread on social media or broadcast as news on television. This action, which will enable us to keep our anxiety and stress management at healthy levels, will also be effective in maintaining social isolation for ourselves and our family. The people we need to pay most attention to when making statements within the family are children. While telling them why they can't go to school, go out or see their friends; We can stay away from fearful and threatening discourses, not by saying that there is a threat called a virus in the world and in our country, but rather that some people have the flu and we need to stay at home to protect ourselves until they recover.
We can answer the questions they ask accurately and honestly. We must explain. Keeping our communication tighter, informing them about how to behave and what to do instead of warning them that there is a virus outside every day, not reflecting our anxiety and worry on them, not leaving their news sources open all the time, and making spending time at home fun will enable them to get through this process healthily.
The best defense is attack! Since we cannot deal with an epidemic by saying, the best protection is precaution! We should not forget this thought. Acting together, so to speak; Supporting team play will distance our country from the criticism of the epidemic days and will be effective in returning life to normal. A certain period of time must pass for the human body to become immune to this disease and for the time to come when this disease can be overcome like the flu. The best thing we can do is to protect ourselves and our environment and prolong the time of detection
as much as we can.
By creating breathing spaces for ourselves in our lives, by engaging with books, music, and various fields of art, we can increase our psychological resilience and resistance to the idea of epidemic. We can raise it.
Finally and most importantly; Children need to believe that the world is safe. The way to provide them with this need is directly proportional to the attitudes and behaviors of adults. In this context, it will be important for adults to keep their emotions and thoughts under control and to remain calm. Let's not forget that the guarantee of our future is our children!
