Today, I will talk about an approach of Existential Psychotherapists, which is one of the psychotherapy approaches and also has a philosophy (the philosophy is divided into two groups, one group is atheist and the other group has religious approaches).
What is death in terms of Existential Psychotherapy?
It is a difficult subject, but abandonment is the real and unchangeable thing, death.... Now I will ask you 2 separate questions, but when answering, think deeper by trying to find different answers other than the first answer that comes to your mind. At least 1 min. Think deeply patiently and please do not read the rest of the article without thinking about the answers to the questions. If you are ready, I ask:
1. Question: Why don't you commit suicide? ...
I feel like I hear your answer; It's a stupid question, why should I commit suicide?, for my children, I have so many things to do, am I crazy?, it's a good idea, for my lover, for my wife, it's a sin, it's against my beliefs, etc., etc...
2. Question: Why do you live? ...
I feel like I can hear your answers again; I still have things to do., for my children, it's a very stupid question, I'm alive because I'm not dead, for my wife, for my lover, it's God's will, I don't know what it is to you, it's a strange question, I've never thought about it before, etc., etc.
Yes, these are two questions that some may find difficult, some may find ridiculous, and some may suddenly shock others. The answers given are actually excuses, and underneath lies the Anxiety created by the Fear of Death that we are not aware of. Death is the only reality and is inevitable, to be born means to die. This fact and the unknown of death causes anxiety in our unconscious. To alleviate this anxiety, we would like to think that the truth will never come to us. We do not want to accept that we will die, until we face the reality of death, we act like who will die, will I get sick, will these deaths not happen to me. Even when we go to the funeral home, we start making jokes to ease this anxiety. However, like others, we will die and this life will end. The unknown is when and how we will die. Yesterday is gone and the future is uncertain, but there is only now. Therefore, every second of our life is incredibly valuable and should be lived for ourselves. We don't have time to waste, we will die, we don't have the luxury of wasting our lives, no matter how realistic and self-sacrificing the things we pursue. Do we benefit ourselves? Are we living for others or for ourselves? Do we live so that others will love or like us, or do we live for our own true happiness?
Yes, you will die, you don't have even a second to waste, accept this and live for your own happiness, your real goals, leave the excuses and fakes and just be yourself for yourself...
